Turtle and Marine Conservation Volunteer in Costa Rica

If you have a passion for helping endangered species, then join TRU Experience Travel in the Limon Province and become a Costa Rica conservation volunteer to help conserve and protect sea turtles. You will spend your time here assisting the resident biologist in caring for injured animals, moving eggs to safe hatcheries and collecting and processing biometric data. This will be a rewarding experience you won’t forget in a hurry as you get to know more about sea turtles and make a difference to their safety.

Go off the grid as you help protect an endangered species

This project is located in a quiet, remote area accessible only by boat and there is limited electricity in the evenings provided by solar panels. Your time on this project will be spent patrolling for sea turtles laying their eggs, rebuilding defends to protect them from the ocean or establishing hatcheries. This will be a hands-on but rewarding task and sometimes you may even need to help with the maintenance and improvements of the accommodation, clearing paths and beach cleaning. Get ready to get your hands dirty as you help save an endangered species!

Trip Itinerary

During your Turtle and Marine Conservation Volunteer project in Costa Rica, you’ll be part of an essential team working to protect sea turtles and preserve marine ecosystems. You’ll assist with night patrols, nesting support, beach cleanups, and data collection—so bring your passion and flexibility. Depending on the season, your workload and tasks may vary, but you should be ready to be actively involved for 4–8 hours a day.

Mandatory Orientation Day

On the Monday of your first week as a Turtle and Marine Conservation Volunteer, you’ll join an orientation session to get familiar with the local area, the project goals, and Costa Rican culture. From Tuesday onward, your volunteer activities will begin and follow the usual schedule for the rest of the week.

Daily Schedule

Your schedule will be flexible, but you should be prepared to be active for 4-8 hours a day. You will have lunch with your local co-workers and pax and can expect to be occupied between 09:00 in the morning until just before 16:00, depending on your schedule, giving you plenty of time to immerse yourself in the project and to get to know co-workers.

Evenings and Weekends

After your day, your evenings are usually free—except when you’re on night patrol! Weekends are a great time to relax, explore the beautiful coastlines, or plan group excursions with other volunteers. Many enjoy staying close to camp for beach bonfires, local food, or just stargazing by the shore.

Places to Visit

Limon offers plenty for your weekends, including stunning beaches, surfing, snorkeling, and wildlife tours. Nearby Puerto Viejo is a volunteer favorite—known for its vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, great food, and relaxed beach vibe. You can also explore Cahuita National Park or visit the Jaguar Rescue Center. With easy access to both jungle and coast, Limon is your gateway to some of Costa Rica’s most unforgettable adventures!

Please note: This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

When confirming your dates please take note of Public Holidays in the Holidays section. During such times, there may be disruption to the programme, as we work with local organisations, and so must be flexible to their needs.
