Healthcare Medical Volunteer in Ghana

This is a really popular programme with young people looking to gain valuable medical experience – but it’s also great for those who just want to make a difference in poorer communities. You won’t need previous experience, or be asked to do anything you can’t do, so be assured that you can work to your strengths! However, those that can, will be invited to take on a more hands-on role by the medical staff as you find your feet as a Healthcare Medical Volunteer.

Get Valuable Experience in a range of Healthcare Settings

TRU has developed a close relationship with a number of hospitals and clinics in Accra to provide this great opportunity for our volunteers to help locals access badly needed healthcare. And your help will be welcomed by local medical staff as they deliver essential treatment to patients. However, as Ghana’s hospitals and healthcare centres are inundated on a daily basis, this is a very busy hands-on role, so be ready to hit the ground running!

Trip Accommodation

Accra is the capital and largest city in Ghana, with a population of over two million. Our volunteer centre where you’ll be staying, is located in Teshie, a coastal suburban town near Accra. It is a quickly growing suburb that’s getting bigger every day. Teshie is a vibrant town, with its own train station for easy transport to many of Ghana’s landmarks and places of natural beauty.

About the Accommodation

We know that safety is your top priority, and it’s ours too! Our Centre in Accra is located within a gated community, with dorm-style separate male/female accommodation. The programs are located between 20 to 40 minutes from the centre and transportation is readily available (all transport is extra).

And if you’re coming by yourself for the first time, you won’t be alone! There will always be other volunteers to spend time with, and there are staff on-site 7 days a week to help you. Wifi is limited, so we recommend you purchase your own SIM card to help stay connected with friends and family.

Food Arrangements

If you haven’t tried Ghanaian cuisine, before, we think you’ll love mealtimes!  Typical Ghanaian food includes rice dishes, beans, fruits, vegetables, chicken, beef, and fish with its own African spices.  At our centre, you’ll find a mix of Ghanaian and Western food to enjoy, with all meals, tea, coffee, and filtered water included in your stay. There are 3 meals during the week and 2 meals on weekends.

Facilities

Our Volunteer Centre is close to all amenities with the closest shops within a 15-20 minute walk. ATMs are 15 minutes away by taxi, and restaurants and bars (including Wifi cafes) are a 20-minute taxi ride from the centre.
