Environmental Conservation Volunteer in Zanzibar
Trip Details
Environmental Conservation Volunteer in Zanzibar
If you want to make a difference in the world by taking part in an environmental conservation project then TRU Experience Travel has the project for you. You will spend your time helping restore the old town of Stone Town, Zanzibar and bring it back to its original beauty. Not only that you will be building a whole new world for the future generations with your environmental efforts as you take part in beach clean-ups, tree and seed planting and school gardening.
Help change the negative impact tourism has had on the local community
Stone Town is known for its rich history, culture, architecture, and street foods and is a must-see attraction for all tourists who are interested in the history and culture of Zanzibar. This has caused a massive negative impact on the community and environment and as a volunteer with TRU Experience Travel you will help change that! Work with local schools to encourage students to care about the environment and sow the seeds (literally and figuratively!) to path the way for a environmentally conscious future generation!
Experience Zanzibar’s friendly culture and vibrant community!
Your won’t do any volunteer work on the weekends, so you’ll have lots of time to head off on mini-adventures, exploring the area, and travelling further afield with new friends at the weekend! There are glorious beaches, a surfers’ paradise and historical places to visit, such as Stone Town, in the oldest part of Zanzibar. If you’re looking for a little more excitement, you are some great hiking and trekking routes, as you watch out for the diverse and exotic array of wildlife that lives here. Whatever your interests, this project is the perfect combination of ecological excitement and straight-up adventure!

Trip Accommodation
A labyrinth of narrow alleyways framed by coral stone buildings, carved wooden doors, and terracotta rooftops, Stone Town is where centuries of trade and culture meet. Once a bustling stop along the spice and silk routes, its streets still hum with the scent of cloves and the rhythm of Swahili life. From sunrise calls to prayer to sunset over the harbour, every corner offers a glimpse into Zanzibar’s layered history and warm hospitality.
About the Accommodation
Our accommodation is in Chukwani, a peaceful village just outside Stone Town. It offers a quieter, more local experience while keeping you close to the historic centre and nearby beaches like Buyu and Mangapwani. You’ll be based in our central volunteer house, blending Swahili-style architecture with simple, comfortable amenities to make you feel at home.
Rooms are shared, single-gender, and equipped with mosquito nets and fans. Private rooms may be arranged upon request and availability. The house also has a communal lounge, a shaded courtyard for relaxing after activities, and a rooftop terrace perfect for catching the evening breeze.
Food Arrangements
We provide three meals a day on weekdays and two on weekends. Local meals typical of Zanzibari culture will be served, such as wali (rice), ugali (maize porridge), nyama choma (grilled meat), mshikaki (marinated beef), samaki (fish), pilau (spiced rice), biriyani, and ndizi-nyama (plantains with meat). Once per week, all participants join together to create the weekly food plan, making mealtimes a shared and social part of the experience.
Facilities
There are a few small local stores that sell snacks, drinks, and any basic supplies you might need during your stay. Nearby, there are also ATMs, banks, shops, and a local pharmacy should you need them during your culture week or volunteering project.
Wifi
The volunteer accommodation does not have Wi-Fi, so if you would like to stay connected with your family and friends whilst in Tanzania, we recommend bringing an unlocked mobile phone. The local team will assist you with purchasing a local SIM card when you arrive. Additionally, you can access Wi-Fi from cafes and restaurants in Zanzibar.
