Agriculture Volunteer in Nagano, Japan

Would you like to give back to local farmers in Nagano whilst improving your green finger skills? Then this TRU Experience volunteer project will help you do just that! Work alongside local farms and learn from them how to plant and harvest crops, protect them from animals and preserve them for wintertime. Needless to say, you should have a keen interest in outdoor farming and not be afraid engage in some heavy lifting!

Grow your farming skills with local Japanese farmers whilst learning about their customs

Farming in Japan is different from farming in the western world as the mountainous Japanese landscape doesn’t allow for big, stretched out fields. Instead people run their own farms, tugged into the hills! Whilst the younger generation leaves the countryside, the work is getting harder for the ones who stay, and this is where you come in! You will help the farmers grow vegetables and crops and tend to their animals whilst learning about the work and culture of the local villagers who are afraid their customs will die with them if they don’t impart their knowledge.

Explore and discover Japan in your free time

During this project, your weekends will be for you to do as you please. Whether you want to explore with the volunteer friends you make along the way, or by yourself, there is so much to discover around Japan. Be it you stay local and understand more about the village you are staying in or venture out to bigger cities, you won’t be short of exploration and the local team will be on hand to help you plan your adventures!

In Otaki, a small village of just 800 people, you’ll be surrounded by pure alpine beauty, with Mt. Ontake standing watch. This volcanic peak is not only home to ski trails but also to shrines, spiritual retreats, and centuries of pilgrim traditions. It’s a place where nature, culture, and spirituality intertwine.

About the Accommodation

In Otaki, you’ll stay at a local inn called Tsunehachi, a family-run place where village life feels authentic and close. The inn has a small farm with herbs, crops, chickens, and even a friendly dog in the garden. Rooms are shared with 2–4 people and come with bed linen, towels, and western toilets. Bathrooms are shared and feature hot showers.

The inn is simple but welcoming, with WiFi in public areas and laundry facilities available. Rooms are not lockable and do not include air conditioning, heating, fans, or mosquito protection, so be prepared for the natural rhythms of the mountain climate.
